After 34 years at MC, 23 as Head Baseball Coach, Mario Porto has decided to retire from the coaching ranks
After 34 years at MC, 24 as head coach, Mario Porto has announced that this will be his last year coaching at MC to become a full-time grandfather, golfer and fisherman.
Coach Porto came to Moorpark College in the Fall of 1989 as an assistant coach to Ken Wagner, where they promptly won a WSC Championship in 1990.
Porto was named head coach after Wagner retired from coaching in 2000. Porto is a 3 time WSC Coach of the Year when they won WSC Championships in 2004, 2012 and 2018. After winning a WSC championship in 2012, Baseball was dropped due to budget cuts.
After a two year hiatus and through fundraising, Baseball and Porto returned in 2014 to prepare for the 2015 season.
In 2020, the Raiders were enjoying a good start when the spring sports season was suspended for the Covid-19 Pandemic. In 2021, they were able to play a modified scheduled season along with 7 other WSC North & South conference teams.
He currently, he has a 344-475-6 (417%) won loss record at Moorpark going into the last week of the season.
He has coached several athletes that transferred to the 4 year level and several athletes that have made it to Major League Baseball.
Porto prepped at Hueneme HS, went to Ventura College before transferring to Cal State Stanislaus where he was member of the 1977 NCAA DIII National Championship team. He started his coaching career at Moorpark HS in 1985 as JV Baseball coach becoming Varsity coach in 1986.
Prior to his last game on Saturday, April 26th when the Raiders host Bakersfield at 1p. there will be a short ceremony to pay homage to Coach on his retirement.
He and is wife Julie already have an across the globe trip planned to parts unknown and a long roadtrip planned to the Pacific Northwest.
