Your Moorpark College Raiders track & field team spent Friday in beautiful Santa Barbara. Several athletes had outstanding performances including two conference champions in Friday’s Western State Conference Prelims/Finals. All field events contested Friday were finals. The top six athletes in the final events qualify for the Southern California Championships which will be held at San Diego Mesa College in two weeks. .
Athlete of the day for Moorpark College is Niko Althaus. Niko jumped a life best to win the pole vault today with an amazing jump of 15′ 5″. Teammate Rodger Mantor placed 4th with a jump of 14′ 5.25″. Both athletes have next week off and then will test their skills at the Southern California Championships.
Throwers Patrick Smith and Austin “Dewey” Benson dominated the shot put. Smith won the shot put with a toss of 50′ 3.25″ while Dewey threw 47′ 11.75″ for 2nd place.
Sophomore, Bailey Schentrup finally broke the 18 foot barrier in the long jump. Schentrup took second with an 18′ 2″ jump behind Chiza Eze of L.A. Valley who jumped 18′ 11″.
In addition to the field events, the 10,000m run was also contested as a final event today. Megan McNally finished 6th (40:18) in the grueling 25-lap race to qualify for Southern California Championships. Teammate Alexis Pichardo took 7th with a time of 40:51.
Moorpark College had several more qualifiers for next week championship meet at Moorpark College. Emily Kelly finished 2nd overall in the 1,500m (4:59) and also qualified in the 800m (2:24). Sara McDonald qualified in all 3 sprints by placing 2nd in the 400m (56.87) and 200m (25.47) and 5th overall in the 100m (12.51). Bailey Schentrup (1:01) and Shawn Tedjasaputra (50.46) also qualified in the 400m.
Additional highlights include the following PRs today:
* Evan Traffenstedt 2 foot PR in the long jump (19′ 9.5″)
* James Effarah 50.84 in the 400
* Trevor Edwards nearly 2 second PR in the 400 (51.86)
* Ahmed Kassem 1/2 second PR in the 400 (52.18)
* Eliza Nielsen almost half second PR in the 100m hurdles (17.86)
* Tyler Fields almost 1 second PR in the 400m hurdles (58.84)
* Hayley Moore 3 second PR in the 800m (2:53) and 6 second PR in the 1500 (5:44)
Please come out Friday, April 27th to support your Raider track team and enjoy a high quality championship meet. Field events are scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM and running events begin at 2:00 PM with the 3,000m steeplechase.
